Short description:

Electricity in Ghana is a key determinant of the country’s continued economic growth, but supply has recently struggled to keep up with demand. Given the current energy dilemma in Ghana there is a huge need to improve education in the field of renewables and energy sustainability and establish long-term cross-university management structures for curriculum development.
It was jointly investigated that a cross-university Renewable Energy Education Framework (REEF) will have immense benefits for all Ghanaian partners and the Center of Innovative Energy Systems (ZIES) as German partner. The REEF will empower Ghanaian partners to develop clearly defined profiles and curriculum modules with greater relation to practice as well as incorporating interdisciplinary aspects to address society, economy, technology and sustainability aspects.

The REEF will show a clear path towards a sustainable energy future and implement 5 direct project objectives within the subject-related partnership programme of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD):

  1. A structural reinforcement of curriculum modules with sustainable energy focus can be more efficiently organized and universities are empowered to adapt to changing sustainability challenges by sharing experiences in a cross-university setting.
  2. Three specialization curriculum modules are developed to develop a bachelor curriculum “Renewable Energy Production and Sustainable Energy Use” at CCTU.
  3. A specialization curriculum module “Sustainable Waste Management and Biomass” is developed which will support the future planned master programme at KTU.
  4. The cooperation with higher education institutions in Ghana will promote the intercultural competences of HSD on university management level and for academics involved from ZIES in subject-related content.
  5. Development-relevant networks between partners in industry, government institutions e.g. REAG and other institutions of high education are established and relevance of the programme for the Ghanaian economy is achieved.
